Over on the Indiana Hill Billy Pool Dig thread, user 8corneflakes showed off a pic of their beautiful—and bargain priced—cantilever umbrella from Kohl's.

We loved it (and the price) we got one also! Hither'south how it looked on Kohl's website:

Unfortunately, the base for it is a monstrosity:

Look at information technology! It dwarfs my patio furniture. I refuse to accept such a gigantic eyesore in my back g. And then, I dug a hole:

It'south over 3 anxiety deep and just over a pes in bore:

I filled the lesser with gravel, so I inserted a physical forming tube:

Mixed up 300 pounds of concrete:

Poured it in:

Placed bolts into carefully measured holes in a board:

And carefully embedded the bolts in the concrete. After a 24-hour interval or so I removed the board:

And kept the concrete anchor wet for a proficient, thorough cure:

After a calendar week, I bolted the umbrella'due south base to the concrete anchor:

And completed assembly! No more FUGLY base!

This was my first time working with concrete. Information technology wasn't equally scary as I thought!

Anyway, thanks 8corneflakes for the umbrella source!

Nice, clean, neat job.

Look into purchasing or making a cover for your umbrella to use when it is airtight. If non, the sun will destroy the fabric in a short period of time. I'g on my 2nd umbrella (covered when airtight) since my first one lasted but a yr.

-Gary

Prissy, clean, neat job.

Look into purchasing or making a embrace for your umbrella to use when it is closed. If non, the sun will destroy the textile in a short menstruum of fourth dimension. I'g on my second umbrella (covered when closed) since my first one lasted merely a year.

I second that. I'thousand on my 2nd umbrella (not cantilever but but really nice!) as the outset was destroyed by a falling tree branch. The summit of the erstwhile one was severely faded, and I'm getting fade marks on this one (it's black.) Definitely need to make a cover for information technology!

Did you use "J-Bolts"? I cant tell by your photo - be very careful with air current load if the only penetration is straight bolts. That tin can rip out. The fasteners should take been galvanized to inhibit corrosion and the chemical reaction to the concerete. They look like they are Yellow Zinc coated in the photo's??

Y'all did a overnice job- I simply dont desire to see information technology come out of the footer on a high wind day.

Overnice job. I did something similar, only as usual, I kinda made it hurricane proof. I take nearly 1200lbs of physical/sand with 4 pes pipes embedded in angles to prevent any motility.

Poured the block with embedded bolts (poured ii blocks for 2 11 human foot cantilever umbrellas)...

Bolted the base down to it (and then filled the base with 300lbs of sand):

Voila'...

Hi Nutjob ... if y'all withal have the base ... any desire to sell it? I'k brusk a base of operations and having a tough fourth dimension sourcing one through the manufacturer or Kohls. Tx

Some excellent examples of how to properly weight a cantilever umbrella here... 300 lbs of concrete! :bowdown:That volition certainly do it. I constitute this guide to be quite helpful in setting up a cantilever umbrella base of operations that doesn't flop over in the mild breeze.
